As we all know, the real estate market in California is in the doldrums and I am looking for a steady career. I see in the employment ads many opportunities for real estate paralegals. My question is, if I got my paralegal certificate, would this be a viable career choice? A steady income is more important to me right now. Any advice is appreciated.

It might be, but you would need to check those ads carefully and/or contact the prospective employers. Most prefer degrees over certificates (even an Associate’s Degree is better than a certificate) but a degree program will take longer than a certificate.
I suggest going to a local community college that offers an ABA-approved paralegal program. See this website for a list in CA:
As you will note, there are a few community colleges in CA that offer a paralegal program (Associate or certificate) so the cost will be less expensive than a university.
Warning: Jobs in the field of Law are REALLY drying up FAST!!! Reasons: bad economy, everyone thinks they can be their own attorney thanks to the Web, law schools (including schools that train legal support personnel) are churning out more graduates than today’s economy can support, law office environments are VERY political and most bosses do not have their employees’ best interests at heart.
Generally a paralegal “certificate” isn’t worth the paper it is printed on – most legal employers want degrees.
Suggestion: Go into the field of healthcare
